Compare Kahului, Maui to Other Major Cities Education

Education comparison of Kahului, Maui to other major cities

Maui's jobs have traditionally been blue collar (hospitality industry and agriculture-based), therefore, a high school degree was the common level of achievement. We are starting to see a shift as technology jobs increase and economic diversification occurs, more college graduates are required. The Maui Community College is offering its first four-year degree beginning Fall, 2004. Prior to that Bachelor's degrees courses were offered through the University of Hawaii. This Fall also saw the launch of Embry Riddle's Master of Science in Technical Management Program on Maui, with classes offered at the Maui Research and Technology Park.

The cost of educating students on Maui compares favorably with the national average as well as Denver and Seattle. We are also in line with the national average for teacher/student ratio. Maui offers many fine private schools in addition to public education for those seeking an enhanced educational experience for their children.

Kahului's educational achievement index is below the national average. Perhaps this is due to the very diverse ethnic population on Maui (see Compare to other Major Cities -People) or possibly that many homes have both parents working. Whatever the case, it is an issue that has been recognized and is being dealt with at the State Board of Education level as well as locally in the communities.
