The Maui Research and Technology Park (MRTP),
one of 12 Hawaii Foreign-Trade Zone (FTZ) designations
in the state, lies outside U.S. Customs territory
for tax, duty and quota purposes, thereby helping
companies engaged in international trade to significantly
reduce their operating costs.
The zones may be used to store, exhibit, manufacture,
assemble, re-label, import and export products
without payment of duties prior to re-export or
entry into U.S. trade.
Especially attractive to light manufacturing,
the MRTP has special zoning for tax-free warehousing
and product delivery to Asia and the rest of the
world. Businesses located in the park are able
to utilize Zone status for cost-efficient international
trade. Kahului airport and Kahului harbor provide
air and sea access to the markets of the Pacific
rim.
