Education
Maui offers public and private pre-kindergarten to 12th grade schools that
prepare students for success in the 21st century. The county’s public
schools are part of the statewide school system that is managed by the
Hawaii Department of Education. The Maui County district is made up of 30
public schools and includes several that are accredited by the Western
Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), one of six regional associations
that accredits public and private learning institutions in the United
States.
A variety of education options are available to meet your family’s needs,
including charter, faith-based, Montessori, Waldorf and college-preparatory
formats. Nationally recognized, WASC accredited school Seabury Hall also
calls Maui home.
Public school students have the unique opportunity to participate in the
Hawaiian Language Immersion Program offered at select schools. This
K-12 program teaches the standard school curriculum using the Hawaiian
language to help perpetuate the language and culture of Hawaii’s indigenous
people.
Students are provided additional tools of success through extracurricular
programs in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) disciplines and
local businesses internships through the community and non-profit
organizations.
The University of Hawaii’s Maui Community College (MCC) offers degree and
certificate programs in a variety of disciplines on campus and through
distance learning centers that utilize the latest technology. Its 78-acre
campus is home to the Maui Culinary Academy, which is housed in a new $14
million state of the art facility and offers a curriculum that blends
traditional European training with Hawaii’s multiethnic cuisine. The
academy’s culinary arts and baking associate degrees are accredited by the
American Culinary Federation Educational Institute.
The college’s University of Hawaii Center offers additional education
opportunities by providing distance bachelor and master programs from
campuses across the state. MCC also offers an extensive selection of
continuing education courses and is home to the Sustainable Living Institute
of Maui, which aims to foster sustainable, innovative methods of community
development and management.
