Tourism
There’s a local expression – Maui no ka oi – which means "Maui is the best." For fourteen years Maui has been voted Best Island in the World in the Condé Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Awards Poll. On any given day over 50,000 tourists are enjoying all that Maui County offers – top-rated beaches; idyllic weather; world-class recreational amenities, shopping and spas; and stunning biodiversity.
Last year over 2 million visitors from across the globe came to Maui’s shores and the latest data show that in 2006 tourists spent over $3.7 billion. The county’s three islands (Maui, Molokai, and Lanai) offer more than 19,000 units for rent, with healthy occupancy rates throughout the year. Tourism remains one of Maui’s strongest economic engines.
The Hawaii Tourism Authority is the state’s leading industry advocate and manager. The State of Hawaii’s Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism is a regulatory body that continues to develop methods to manage tourism’s growth in a way that maximizes both the residents’ quality of life and the visitor experience.
