Transportation
Maui lies midway between the continental U.S. and Asia and the Pacific Rim nations, offering easy access to a wide variety of international markets. Travel within Maui County’s three islands and between Honolulu and Hawaii’s neighbor islands is available through regular and extensive air and sea travel services. The average commute time in Maui County is 20 minutes.
AIR SERVICE
Maui’s primary airport (OGG) is located in Kahului, the primary business center of Maui. The airport provides general aviation, commuter and helicopter services. The major carrier on Maui is the award winning Hawaiian Airlines. The airport provides domestic, international and interisland service to 6 million passengers a year, with 90% of flights on time. Maui also features 4 secondary airports that provide commuter services.
Additional routes are available from Honolulu International Airport, which is a 30-minute plane ride away.

PORT FACILITIES
With about 3.9 million tons of cargo passing through Kahului Commercial Harbor each year, water transportation remains the primary means by which goods reach Maui. Harbor operations are located on 50 acres and include storage, warehouse, office and tenant facilities.
The 3-pier harbor specifications are as follows:
- Entrance channel is 660’ in width and 40’ in depth
- Basin is 2,050’ in width and 2,400’ in length, with a project depth of 35’
- Pier 1 total berthing space is 1,658’ with a nominal water depth of 35’, and includes a 150-foot mobile crane
- Pier 2 total berthing space is 1,184’ with a nominal water depth of 27-32’
- Pier 3 berthing space is 500’ in length with an apron width that varies from 36’ to 44’ and a nominal water depth of 18’
INTERISLAND FERRY SERVICE
Maui County’s three islands (Maui, Molokai, and Lanai) are connected by ferry services that offer regular travel times. Ferry travel is also available between Maui and Honolulu that accommodates passenger and commercial vehicles.
