MEDB has enjoyed 25 years of providing
leadership and vision to our community for the responsible design and development
of a strong and diversified economy.
The Science of Making Choices. For Kamalii Elementary fifth graders like Dayna Bersamin, concepts such as scarcity of resources, supply and demand, inflation and opportunity costs sounded more like college talk. However, because of an online course called “Fundamentals of Economics” taken by her teacher Ray Hart, Dayna and her classmates were able to enjoy an enthusiastic dose of economics and learn how much they live it everyday.
To create the best possible climate for responsible economic development, Maui Economic Development Board is committed to providing on-going Economic Literacy education efforts for youth and adults on Maui.
MEDB has developed a plan to systematically educate our youth about the economy and increase awareness of the opportunities available to them in Maui's future. Economics is a life skill, and the most effective way of reaching youth is through the teachers, making the classroom a critical outreach venue.
In the adult program, MEDB conducts community forums designed to engage residents in productive discussion, allowing them to express diverse ideas that create consensus building around the County’s many interrelated industries and interests. Workshop participants have indicated that the experience transforms their views on issues and Maui's economy.
MEDB’s Economic Literacy program has:
Engaged more than 200 Maui citizens in interactive forums, fostering a greater understanding of Maui's economy.
Increased the number of teachers integrating economics in the classroom from 2 to 80, most recently by developing a 5-week online course, Fundamentals of Economics.
Sponsored grade school teachers to become certified Mini-Society instructors, following a nationally recognized entrepreneur and economics-based curriculum.
Facilitated nomination of Stacia Paa, a 4th grade Kihei Elementary teacher as Hawaii Council on Economic Education Teacher of the Year for Economic Excellence. The award serves to focus statewide attention on Maui's efforts to instill greater economic understanding among our youth.
Served as mentor at Youth Vision leadership conferences, facilitating community-based project planning for groups representing nine Maui County geographic areas.
Begun plans for Maui's Economic Future—a reprise of the 1981 conference that led to the development of MEDB, and a focus on technology as a new industry base.
